What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone — no plastic card needed. Simply install a profile with a QR code and you'll have a local data plan ready in minutes.
Which devices are compatible?
Please use the compatibility checker on any country or region plan page. Most iPhones XS and newer, recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models, and many cellular iPads support eSIM. You can also dial *#06# — if you see an EID, your phone supports eSIM.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Checkout is encrypted, your account is protected by sign-in, and your dashboard only shows your own orders and usage. For details on how we handle personal data, please see our Privacy Policy.
When does my plan start?
You may activate any time within 180 days of purchase. Validity days begin on your first network connection, not at checkout. Please note that purchases are not refundable — see our Refund Policy for details.
Any roaming fees or contracts?
No — there are no roaming fees, no contracts, and no hidden charges. The price you see is the price you pay.
How do I install my eSIM?
After payment, please open My eSIMs and scan the QR code. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. Please use Settings rather than the Camera app alone, so your plan installs correctly.
Do I need Wi-Fi to install?
Yes. We recommend installing your eSIM on Wi-Fi at home or at the airport before you rely on local data. Once the profile is on your phone, it can connect to a partner network when you arrive.
Should I install before I fly or after I land?
We recommend installing before you fly, so you're not searching for Wi-Fi on arrival. Validity days still begin on your first network connection in a covered country, not when you scan the QR code.
Can I keep my mobile number for calls and texts?
Yes. Please keep your home SIM or eSIM active for calls and SMS, and use eSIMcity as your data line. Turn on data roaming only for the travel eSIM, and set it as your mobile data line in Settings.
Does hotspot or tethering work?
Most plans allow a personal hotspot so you can share data with a laptop or tablet. If a plan restricts hotspot use, we'll note that on the destination page before you buy.
How do I check if my iPhone supports eSIM?
iPhone XS and later generally support eSIM. US iPhone 14 and newer have no physical SIM tray, so eSIM is required. Go to Settings → Cellular and look for Add eSIM. Carrier-locked or some regional models may differ.
How do I check if my Android phone supports eSIM?
Recent Google Pixel and flagship Samsung Galaxy phones typically support eSIM. Open Settings and search for “Add eSIM” or “SIMs”. If that option is missing, the device may be too old, locked, or a variant without eSIM.
Can I use the same eSIM on two phones?
No. An eSIM profile is tied to one device after install. Buy a separate plan for a second phone, tablet, or travel companion.
What if I switch phones or factory-reset my device?
Resetting or moving to a new phone usually deletes the eSIM. Please submit a support ticket before you wipe your device and include your order details. We're often able to reissue an unused or recoverable plan. Please note that data already consumed on an installed profile cannot be transferred.
How do I top up when data runs out?
Open My eSIMs and choose Top up if your destination offers packages. Top-ups add data to the same line. If top-up is not available, buy a new plan for that country or region.
What happens to unused data when the plan expires?
Unused data expires with the validity period and does not roll over. Buy a size that matches your trip, or top up if you need more days or gigabytes.
Can I get a refund?
We're sorry, but eSIM plans are prepaid digital products and cannot be refunded after payment, including unused or uninstalled profiles. If we fail to issue a working eSIM, please submit a support ticket with your order ID and we may be able to reissue a replacement. Please see our Refund Policy for full details.
Do plans include 5G?
Where the destination page lists 5G and your phone plus the local network support it, yes. Speeds still vary with coverage, congestion, and indoor locations — same as any local SIM.
How many countries can I use?
Country plans work in that destination only. Regional plans cover a listed set (for example Europe or Asia). Global plans span 120+ countries. Always match every stop on your trip to the coverage list before you buy.
Country plan or regional plan — which should I buy?
Stay in one country the whole trip? A country plan is usually simpler and often cheaper per GB. Crossing borders? Choose a regional or global plan so you do not install a new eSIM at each border.
Why isn't my eSIM connecting?
Please confirm the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data, data roaming is on for that line, and you are in a covered country. Try toggling Airplane mode, restarting your phone, then waiting a minute for the network to connect. If it still fails, please submit a support ticket with your order and a screenshot of your Cellular / SIM settings.
Can I install more than one travel eSIM?
Yes, if your phone supports multiple eSIM profiles. Only one data line is active at a time. Label plans by destination in Settings so you can switch when you change countries.
Do I get a phone number or SMS with eSIMcity?
Travel plans are typically data-only. WhatsApp, iMessage, and other internet apps work over data. Banking SMS and regular calls stay on your mobile number if you keep that line on.
What speeds should I expect?
You use local 4G/5G partner networks, not roaming from your home carrier. Typical speeds are similar to a local prepaid SIM. Rural areas, crowded events, and indoor venues can be slower.
How long is my QR code valid?
Install within 180 days of purchase. After first connection in a covered country, the plan’s validity days begin. Keep a screenshot or the dashboard QR until the trip is over.
Do I need to change APN settings?
Usually no — the eSIM profile includes the correct APN. If data does not start after install, check that the eSIMcity line is the mobile data SIM and roaming is enabled. Manual APN steps, if ever needed, are in your order email or dashboard.
Can I delete the eSIM after my trip?
Yes. Remove it in Settings → Cellular / SIMs when you no longer need it. Deleting an expired plan is safe. Do not delete an active plan if you still need the remaining data.
Who do I contact if something goes wrong?
Please sign in and submit a support ticket from the Support page. Include your destination, device model, and what you see in Settings. We'll be happy to get back to you as soon as we can.
I only have one phone — how do I scan the QR code?
On the dashboard, open the QR on another screen (laptop, tablet, or a friend’s phone) and scan it with yours. Many phones also offer “Enter details manually” using the SM-DP+ address and activation code shown under the QR.
Where do I find the SM-DP+ address and activation code?
Sign in to My eSIMs, open the plan, and tap Show QR. The LPA / activation code is listed under the code. Copy it if your phone asks for manual install instead of a scan.
Can I install on iPad or another tablet?
Cellular iPads that support eSIM can use a travel plan the same way as a phone. Wi-Fi-only iPads cannot. Check Settings → Cellular for Add eSIM. Tablets count as a separate device — buy a second plan if you also use a phone.
Does Apple Watch work with eSIMcity?
Travel data eSIMs are for phones and cellular tablets. Apple Watch cellular uses a carrier pairing from your iPhone’s primary line, not a standalone travel eSIM. Use iPhone hotspot if you need data on the Watch.
My phone is carrier-locked. Will an eSIM work?
Usually no. A locked phone only accepts eSIMs from that carrier. Unlock it with your home operator before you travel, then confirm Add eSIM appears in Settings.
Can I transfer an eSIM to a new iPhone?
Quick Transfer can move some carrier eSIMs, but travel profiles often cannot be transferred once installed. Install a new QR on the new phone only if we reissue the plan through a support ticket. Submit a ticket before you erase the old device.
I bought the wrong country. Can I change it?
If the eSIM is not installed yet, submit a ticket from Support. We can usually cancel the unused plan and help you buy the correct destination. Installed profiles cannot be switched to another country.
I never received my QR email.
Please check your spam and promotions folders, then sign in at My eSIMs — your QR code is always available in your dashboard after payment. Please confirm you used the same email as at checkout. If your order is still missing, submit a support ticket with the payment time and the last four digits of your card.
How do I see how much data I have left?
Open My eSIMs on the website or in the app. Each plan shows remaining data and validity. iOS also shows usage under Settings → Cellular for that line, which may differ slightly from our network counters.
Will I get an alert before data runs out?
The eSIMcity app can notify you as usage climbs. You can also check the dashboard anytime. Turn on cellular data warnings in iPhone or Android settings as a backup.
What does unlimited data actually mean?
Unlimited plans include high-speed data up to a fair-use amount shown on the plan card, then speed may be reduced for the rest of the validity period. They are meant for typical travel use, not constant 4K streaming.
Can I use a VPN with my travel eSIM?
Yes. A VPN runs over the data connection. Some networks or destinations may block certain VPN servers; try another location in the VPN app if one fails. A VPN does not replace local coverage.
Does eSIMcity work in mainland China?
If a China plan is listed, it uses local partner networks. Many global sites and apps are restricted there. A VPN may help for some services but is not guaranteed. Check the destination page for coverage notes before you buy.
Can I use the eSIM on a cruise or a flight?
Coverage follows terrestrial partner networks on land. Ship and aircraft Wi-Fi are separate paid services. Near shore you may briefly pick up a land network; do not count on at-sea coverage.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Checkout uses Stripe. Cards and local methods (for example Apple Pay, Google Pay, or country-specific options) appear based on your location. The amount charged matches the price shown, in the checkout currency.
Can I get a receipt for work or taxes?
Yes. After payment, you can download or print a receipt from My eSIMs or your profile transaction list. The email on your order is the billing contact. Please submit a support ticket if you need a company name added.
Is there a fair-use or throttle policy?
Fixed-GB plans run at network speed until the allowance is gone. Unlimited plans may slow after the high-speed cap on the product page. We do not add extra roaming surcharges.
Why is my battery draining faster abroad?
Phones work harder on roaming and in weak coverage. Set the travel eSIM as the data line, turn off the home line’s data roaming, and disable unused radios. This is normal on any foreign network, not unique to eSIM.
Should I turn on Airplane mode after I land?
No. After landing, turn Airplane mode off (or toggle it once to reset radios), enable the eSIMcity line for mobile data, and enable data roaming on that line only. Airplane mode blocks cellular.
Can family members share one eSIMcity account?
Sign-in is per email. Each person’s phone needs its own installed plan. You can check out with one account and still assign QR codes to different devices as long as each plan is installed only once.
What if my phone is lost or stolen?
Please use Find My or Android Find Hub to lock your device. Then submit a support ticket so we can note your order. Remaining data on an installed eSIM generally cannot be moved to a new phone, but we'll let you know if a replacement may be possible.
Do I need to turn the eSIM off when I get home?
Switch mobile data back to your home line so you are not using leftover travel data at home (it only works in covered countries anyway). You can leave the profile installed until it expires, or delete it in Settings.
